I have spent more hours looking at underdrawings than at finished paintings. Not a confession. A claim about where the real decisions in a painting live.
The underdrawing — that preliminary layer of charcoal, graphite, or dilute paint laid down on the ground before any color touches the surface — is the first architectural argument a painting makes. It fixes where weight falls, where the eye stops, where the surface opens or closes. Everything after, including what the painter discovers mid-process, is a negotiation with those first marks. A painter who starts without one isn’t improvising freely. They’re building without a foundation and calling the wobble a style.
This extends beyond painting. Every medium that produces durable work has a structural layer beneath the visible surface. What an Underdrawing Does

The surface is built from two distinct whites — a warm, slightly creamy white for the ground and a cooler, zinc-heavy white for the tilted square — applied in layers of varying thickness. The edges of the tilted square aren’t hard. They’re worked, softened, reasserted. Beneath both whites, visible in raking light, is a grid. Malevich marked the canvas with a faint geometric scaffold that established the axis of the tilted square relative to the support’s edges. That scaffold is the underdrawing. The structural decision that makes the painting a composition rather than an accident.
The grid doesn’t disappear in the finished work. It persists as the ghost of intention beneath the surface. Standing in front of the painting, the tilted square reads as deliberately placed — not floating, not arbitrary, but positioned according to a logic the surface conceals but doesn’t erase. What painters call the underdrawing, narrative writers call the beat sheet. The term comes from screenwriting, but the practice is older than its name. Reading Structure Across Media
The practice of reading structure — looking beneath the surface for the architecture that determines what the surface can do — isn’t medium-specific. A painter who has never drawn an underdrawing can’t see the compositional logic of a painting they’re looking at. They see surface. They see color. This is why underdrawings matter. Not because they’re historically interesting, though they are. Not because they reveal process, though they do. They matter because they’re the place where the painting’s argument gets made. Everything else is execution. Execution can be corrected. Argument must be composed.
Every medium needs its own beat sheet. Every maker needs to see the structural layer of their own work. And any tool — painterly, literary, or computational — that obscures that layer isn’t assisting the maker. It’s replacing the maker’s most important act of thinking with a surface that looks like the result of thinking but isn’t.
The underdrawing is where the painter thinks. The beat sheet is where the writer thinks. The surface is where that thinking becomes visible to others. Confuse the two, and you’ll spend your career polishing surfaces with nothing underneath them.
